Habitat Project: Due Tuesday, April 5th


TEKS:

  • 7.10A observe and describe how different environments, including microhabitats in schoolyards and biomes, support different varieties of organisms.
  • 7.10B describe how biodiversity contributes to the sustainability of an ecosystem.


Introduction:


  • For this project, you are creating an online resource that describes an organism, its habitat, its biome, and relationship to other organisms. 6th and 8th grade students will use these website when learning about similar topics, and thus I expect the information to referenced and accurate.

Vocabulary:

  • Biome: a large area on earth characterized by unique types of vegetation, animals, and decomposes that have developed under specific soil and climatic conditions.
  • Climate: climate is the description of the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area, including precipitation, humidity, temperature, and wind.
  • Habitat: the place or environment where a plant or animal naturally or normally lives and grows
  • Microhabitat: a very small, specialized habitat where a plant or animal naturally or normally lives and grows; for example, a tree or puddle.
  • Vegetation:the total plant life in a specific area.


Project Outline:


  • STEP 1: Create your Wix Website
    • You or your partner will need an email address
    • Go to http://www.wix.com
    • Click "Login / Sign up" in the top-right corner
    • Click the "Sign Up" tab when the window pops up.
    • Click "Create"
    • Choose an existing template or scroll to the bottom of page and click a blank website.
    • Watch the 2 min introduction video.
    • To upload pictures or other documents, you will need to save them to your student folder first.

  • STEP 2: Setup your pages
    • Page 1: Introduction (25 Points)
      • Include a picture of your organism
      • Include the common and scientific name of your organism and translate the scientifc name; you may need to ask a latin teacher.
      • Describe the location of your organism in the food web; is it a producer, primary or secondary consumer, top predator, or decomposer
      • Include a minimum of 5 additional facts about your organism; write using complete sentences.

    • Page 2: Habitat (25 Points)
      • Include a picture of your organism in its habitat or microhabiat.
      • Include a description of your organisms habitat; what are sources of shelter, food, and water?
      • Describe a microhabitat found within your organisms habitat and list an organism that lives in it
      • Provide the name of the biome in which your organisms habitat is found.

      • Include a map that shows the location of your biome
      • Provide the name of the biome in which your organisms habitat is found.
      • Provide a description of the biome
        • Where on Earth is the biome found?
        • Is the biodiversity high or low compared to other biomes?
        • How much precipitation occurs in the biome?
        • What is the average temperature of the biome?
        • What kind of soil is found there?

    • Page 4: References (25 Points)
      • Use EasyBib or Bibme to create a list of references for all information on your website.

    • Other Pages: You may add additional pages for extra credit.
